Photography taken in July 2021 at Guimarães in Braga, Portugal. The city of Guimarães, nestled in the enchanting landscapes of northern Portugal, is steeped in history and boasts a rich cultural heritage often hailed as the birthplace of Portugal. This distinction is attributed to Afonso Henriques, a key historical figure who was born in Guimarães and would go on to become the first king of Portugal. In July 2021, during the covid-19 pandemic, I joined Francisco, the founder of os230, to travel about 2650 km in 18 days to the 18 continental districts of Portugal. Our purpose was to document the asymmetries and particularities of those regions, by a voluntary non-partisan movement that promotes literacy, capacity for scrutiny and proactivity among our population. We aimed to remind that democracy does not reside only with institutions but within all citizens who, through their proactivity, become key elements in the country’s development.
